Yes, I started to write Madame Orly and then realised she probably wasn't at that point - as there's reference to a Hunt Ball I don't think they are living in France, anyway. There isn't any mention of a father, so I am guessing she was a widow, anyway.
I looked up the quote and it's 'because he was a sailor with no settled home. Because he was just a penniless Lieutenant...' Of course, £450 a year is not in fact penniless in the mid-1920s, but it does suggest to me that he doesn't have anything apart from his pay, and my impression has been that all the Marlow family money, such as it is, is tied up in Trennels (looking ahead to FL). Geoff and Pam have managed to acquire a house in Hampstead, though, which (depending exactly when they bought it) might have cost nearly £1000.
