I expect we'll discuss Peter and Patrick more when we get to FL but it occurs to me that they must have been only about 5 or 6 when they were friends because we know the Marlows didn't go to Trennels during the war. So they weren't really of an age to choose their own friends - at that age parents visit each other and expect their children to go and 'play nicely with each other'.
