I always thought Nicola did pretty well too. She doesn't explicitly think what Peter says later, that the important thing is stopping the secrets getting through, rather than their lives, but she knows that anything that disrupts and delays Foley is a good thing. There isn't going to be a safe way to do it.
I do love the way Forest sets up the 'Sugar in the petrol' rhyme - which I always end up earwormed with myself.
Peter's ideas are pretty similar, though he has no real opportunity to do much because he's locked in the cabin and then Foley is there, when he thinks 'Switching off the engine was no good—but if he could wreck it — there must be tools — at least while the fog and the calm lasted they could do nothing but drift...'
