I have always found Anquetil's timeline very unconvincing and I don't think there is a good way to make it work. I suppose we could think that he came home to be a good son, or at least to see his father and his home (his mother?) as the local people think, and then by the time his father died the Admiralty had him on the case which was why he stayed, but...
