Perhaps Foley was sent to a private school in the usual way, but behaved so outrageously in his first term that he was expelled. And to avoid the same thing happening in another school he was sent to the local grammar school, where he was quite well-behaved because he could spend his evenings and weekends messing around in boats, and having fun with his friend Robert.
