If you make the gap as big as that, it means a couple of things, though:

--that Jon was tearing about the county looking for hawks when he was really rather tiny; not impossible, given that Lawrence seems to operate a start 'em young policy with maritime atlases, though they're less objectively hazardous than birds of prey. This suggests a tutelary role for older sisters, perhaps, though.

--the tearing about was going on when Jon was, say, 13 and Geoff was 25 or so: that doesn't really seem likely to me--though Geoff might well have come to Trennels during his leaves sometimes, I don't think his unenthusiasm for the hawks would be matter for remark if he was an independent adult.

--it makes Geoff's comment that he could 'hardly be polite' to Jon because of his envy of Trennels really very odd indeed, I think, given that Geoff says was 'about Karen's age' when this happened: that's a very peculiar way for an 18-year-old to respond to a 6-year-old, I think, whereas quite understandable between and 18-year-old and a 14-year-old, say.

I mean, I think the explanation is that Forest paid less attention to such minutiae than we're doing, but a forensic examination is necessary b/c past!fic. *grin*
