Oh...Great Expectations is one of my favourite novels. It might help to like fog scenes, I suppose, which I do. I also like The Cruel Sea, which I only read this year, though the film* has been part of mental furniture for almost as long as I can remember. So I was puzzled by the dichotomy.
*challenged in the staff room this week, I named it as my favourite film. It's not; I was just a bit sick of others saying 'ohhh, I dunno, I can't choose'. But a colleague jumped on me (not literally) and said 'do you like Das Boot'? (yep, love it) 'do you like Alien?' (yeah, I guess Alien is pretty good). His conclusion: you just like radar noises. I've been thinking about this for about three days.
