I certainly think the references were deliberate to tie into Patrick's later actions, and it seems evident on re-reading that Patrick had been about to say something about Malise Marlow - in terms of, "you do know what he was actually like, don't you", sort of thing - but he's interrupted. Which makes Peter's reaction to the eventual reveal so much stronger, because he's invested so much in his character by then.
