Re: The infant Dodds' understanding of the events in their life

I found it awful and heart-wrenching. Rose has had all the stability of her life upended several times in quick succession, including now the loss of a parent (and I don't think I'm being unfair to guess that the infant Dodds depended rather more on their mother than their father for emotional support.)

She's learnt that she can't trust the world for things to turn out ok. And now she's learning that she can't trust people she ought to be able to depend on either. (It will be interesting to revisit the issue of Rose and trust at the conclusion of the book.)
