Edwin is provoked, but striking Peter like that is still shown as something he shouldn't have done. Still, with the partial sympathy with which he's presented at the end, with Nicola seeing him grieving with Rose ( as well as the implication that he may just not find socializing and the unfamiliar easy) I think AF implies that someone can behave badly/ have a temper and still be a basically decent person.
