I feel for Elsa, subject to Miranda's barely-suppressed scorn, and what we're told of Mrs West doesn't really suggest that she'd be terribly understanding of novice errors in domestic matters. Mr West would probably be OK, but I sense he spends a lot of time in the Shop. Claudie's duties do include cooking it seems, because we're told by Patrick via his mum she does it 'so easily it isn't true' (so they can't be exploiting her!) Improbable as it is, I can never quite free myself of the suspicion that Claudie has been introduced to the household to further Patrick's, erm, social education, (which it is of course ridiculous in the case of any young man, good as the raw material might be, to leave to chance). So in some ways I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer Miranda's contumely and drudgery while Mrs West attends innumerable committee meetings, though it's a pretty invidious choice.
