Yes, the fact of the traddiness is not unreasonable, it is more the way he expresses it. Though of course he is probably repeating things he's heard from his father which would be couched in a different way.
Part of the problem as you pointed out is the sliding timescale of the books - in a way Patrick's a bit young for his reaction, but having lived through from the 1940s it makes more sense!
