Oddly, I always envisaged him as looking rather like Jeremy Thorpe and/or a friend's father of the relevant date; that 5-o-clock shadow, dark-haired, witty intellectual look - very much the masculine equivalent of Claudie, I expect. He does do charm in a very few lines, doesn't he?
