Things that are drudgy and tedious when Ann does them are splendid and accomplished when Giles does them because of the magic sparkly pixie dust of patriarchy.
More actual LOL!
I notice that when Lawrie turns up for her snack, Ann offers scrambled egg, not omelette, obviously a much lesser, drearier and duller accomplishment, given she hasn't learnt it personally from the chef-patron, possibly named Rene Artois, of a quaint French bistro. And despite all the commentary on Peter, and Giles to some extent, skiving off the household chores earlier in the chapter, no-one seems to think it worthwhile insisting that Giles and Peter, who gets a second omelette when the first one isn't exactly to his taste, should be the ones clearing up.
