I knew a guy with Valentine as a middle name. Barbara and Virginia seemed dated to me when I read the books in the 80s - Erica, Lois, Valerie etc would just be uncommon.
I did notice a correlation at my boarding school between upper-crust English families and wierd names - Lavinia, Luscinia, Dorcas, Honeysuckle, to name a few. Plus the Chinese girls who tended to end up with old-fashioned English names - Phyllis, Vivien, Violet, Susan. We also had nine Sarahs in my year.
