I think the quality of the acting might depend to a large extent on rehearsal times. At a boarding school with thrice weekly rehearsals, there's plenty of time to get it right - it's much more common at day schools to get the impression that another month's rehearsal might have made it good. Certainly I've seen at least two school performances which bore comparison with average professional plays.
