In the 1970s my very protective mother was happy for me to regularly take my younger brother across London by Tube on Saturday mornings. We were 11/12 (me) and 7. Wasn't a big deal. Equally I took both sibs to the Park - worst thing that ever happened is we had a bike stolen by more streetwise kids when we let them "have a go". She's amazed at that now!
And I think, had the opportunity arisen, we might have explored an abandoned house too, if we could get in without doing damage - but also wouldn't have broken in. I wouldn't be impressed if I thought my daughter did though (which is why we don't tell our parents everything!).
Love the way Nicola attempts to minimise how she got so wet, and then realises this won't wash and tells Mrs Marlow (who seems to be conducting an inquest in public, just after we're told she never does at the end of Chapter 1)!
