Mods are trying to keep on top of discussion here, but since it's moving so quickly (and we're delighted about that) we don't always see the comments we should. If you want to ask a mod to take a look at a particular thread you can always do so by LJ messaging, but adding MODS to the header line of your comment in reply will also help us out.

Rituals in old shippens are not advised as a way of summoning mods or anyone else. Always practice firearm safety and don't take any dodgy bags of pennies.

We're really glad to see the community getting so much traffic again. A few mod announcements are necessary to keep things running smoothly, so please take the time to read this post.

The mod team take online bullying very seriously. If someone is harassing you or another member, either on the community or with private messages related to a discussion on Trennels, please feel free to message any of us at any time. Please also feel free to message us with any other concerns you have about the community.

At the risk of sounding like Patrick's ghastly headmaster, we would also suggest you prioritise your own mental health. If you're having adverse emotional reactions to a subject discussed on Trennels, we'd respectfully suggest you take a break from that particular thread for the sake of your own health and come back to the community when you're feeling better.

Discussion of the books is on-topic, whether it concerns Miranda's glancing mention of anti-Semitism, Nicola's tentative acknowledgment that a character in a book 'liked men more than women', Uncle Gerry as a villain compared to Foley, Pomona's capacity for fish pie or anything else. Personal views about themes which are raised in the books are not on topic for the community, and are better off posted on your own journal or in some other medium. For example, "What do you think about Patrick calling his headmaster a bastard? I wonder if he would use the same term of Edward Oeschli?" is fine! "This country is going to the dogs because of the bastards who run faith schools," is not something you should be posting on the community.

We are not OK with racist, homophobic or abusive language or with personal attacks. We will freeze threads that get out of hand and delete anything that we consider trolling or outright hate speech.

The members of Trennels hold a wide range of views on subjects from RPF to Vatican II. We're proud of that diversity, but it does mean we can't guarantee that any particular thread will be a safe space. We will do our best to see that it remains a civil one.

It doesn't have to be your real name, just a consistent handle so other people can follow conversations. Otherwise it's impossible to know if you're talking to the same person when there are several anonymous remarks.

It is wonderful to see so much discussion here again, and happily we have a while to go with the readthrough. Looking ahead, though, I have been jotting down notes occasionally about discussion posts that we might have once the readthrough is done. For example, people might be interested in Forest's writing style, use of POV, etc, or about parents in the books, or acting, or how well the timeline works, or religion, or the Royal Navy, or particular characters, or even things like food and recipes, etc etc. Some of these have of course come up in discussions before, but I'm sure there is more to say.

Of course, it's fine to put up a post about any aspect of Forest at any time, and I wouldn't want anyone to feel they couldn't do that, but I thought some planned posts would also work and help keep the discussions going.

So this post is for people to comment with ideas for future discussion. At this stage I'm only asking for ideas, so please do suggest things you'd like to see on

trennels whether or not you would like to write a post - or several - on it.

Doubtless because the community is much more active - for which many thanks to

lilliburlero and all of you - we are picking up spam comments. When I spot them, I'm reporting and deleting them, but they are popping up on old entries as well and I am not able to track comments to everything. Obviously it would be a bad idea to ban anonymous commenting as there are people without LJs who are participating in the discussion. So if you see a spam comment, especially on an older post, please could you send me a message via LJ (or email if you have my address), with a link if you can, or the name or date of the entry, and I'll go and deal with it as soon as possible.

We have several new people posting and commenting recently, which is great, and we'd like to welcome them. We also have a new mod, though a long-standing member, poster and commenter - welcome

We'd also like to remind everyone, old and new, about a few things (which will also be on the community info page):

1) It's fine to post anonymous comments if you don't have an LJ, but in that case please please please put your name (or your nickname) at the end of all your comments. Otherwise, although the mods could (if they thought about it) tell one anonymous commenter from another by looking at your IP address, no one else can. Conversations go much better if we know who is saying what.

2) Please don't change the font size or colour from the default when you post. This is an accessibility issue - people who have impaired vision or who cannot tolerate dark-on-light schemes will have their custom settings overridden if you do this. If you want to see larger text, for example, you can adjust your browser settings to do this without changing the default font.

If anyone feels we should reset the default font here to be bigger, please say and we will investigate doing this.

3) Please try and put tags on your posts, as it makes it much easier to find old posts once they slip off the front page. There's a list of tags on the main

trennels page in the left-hand column. If there's a tag you want and we've not thought of it, comment and we will add it.

4) Members of the community can also tag posts, so please do! Click on Edit Tags under the post. Especially if there are no tags, but also if there are additional ones you think will be useful to future readers.

5) In general, as always: we have people here of all ages and walks of life, from at least three continents, some of whom may not have English as a first language. We want everyone to feel welcome. Please be courteous and respectful, and remember that we're here to discuss Antonia Forest's books first and foremost.

Finally, although it probably won't be necessary, if you are unhappy with a post or comment, please contact one of the mods. You can reach us via our livejournal email addresses (eg coughingbear@livejournal.com), or LJ direct message, or by commenting to one of the mod posts to ask us to get in touch (if you don't have an LJ, please give an email address or other means of replying to you).

To use them just type whichever tags you want to use in the Tags box, separated by commas if you use more than one. (This is how it works for the LJ post an entry page; I don't know about using posting clients, so anyone who does, please comment.)

Alternatively you can tag a post once it's up, by clicking on 'Edit tags' in the list of commands underneath a post on the main page, or the 'Edit tags' button in the toolbar at the top of an individual post.

Everyone is encouraged to tag posts appropriately, not just the original poster, so if you think a post is missing appropriate tags, please just add them yourself, whether it's an old or new entry. And if a lengthy discussion of a new subject develops in the comments, feel free to add a tag about that too.

Members of the community can't create new tags, just use those on the list, but if you think any extra ones are needed, please comment to this post and

thewhiteowl or I may add them to the list. If you think a post's been wrongly tagged, then again let one of us know and we can change it.

The point of tags is to help people find interesting stuff in the

trennels archives, whether that's fanfiction announcements, discussions of a particular character or book, answers to queries, or anything else. If you click on one of the tags in the list on the main page, it will take you to all the entries with that tag.

And if you do find something of interest to you in the archives, and would like to add to the discussion, we suggest you make a new post, and link back to the earlier post/comments. How to create a link is explained here.

Please do have a look at the main community page once your post is up, to check the html etc has all come out correctly. For example, bad links (and we've all done it) tend to mess with other people's friends pages as they are often rather long, and only the original poster can edit a post.

Finally, could I remind people who don't have an lj/aren't logged in to sign their comments? Otherwise they all just appear as from 'Anonymous', and following a conversation can get a bit difficult.

ankaret has already noticed, we've added tags to

trennels to index the entries. I've also ~~spent far too much time~~ started tagging entries to the community, as has

jediowl. We hope this will make it easier for people to find previous discussions; if you click on a tag in the list at the left-hand side of the main page, you'll be taken to a page listing all the entries tagged with it.

Any member can tag any entry, so please feel free to do so, whether it has no tags or you think a useful one is missing. Click on the 'edit tags' button and use one or more of those in the list of community tags for it. The list includes all the book titles and main character names, plus a slightly random selection of themes and subjects. It doesn't matter if an entry has a lot of tags (if all the Marlow children get mentioned, for example). When you create a new entry, you'll now be able to tag it before posting.

Only mods can add new tags for a community, so if there's something you think we need and it's not on the list, comment here and we'll consider adding it.

The mod hat is rather dusty, because you're all very civilised. It's great to see so many people taking part in the discussion here, including visitors to LiveJournal.

If you don't want to create a journal or use OpenID, but still want to post something, then you can send it to the mods (

coughingbear and myself) and we can post it for you.

If you're commenting on an entry without a journal, or aren't logged in, could I ask that you sign your comments? It doesn't have to be your real name, obviously; it's just to know who's talking, espeically when there are several Anonymouses in one thread.
