Interesting that Ida Cross' looks might be a jab at socialism. I had wondered why Forest chose to make her "one of those plain creatures" apart from the useful benefit of being easy to recognize, and thought that the idea might be that, unappreciated by the world around her, Ida Cross felt no particular qualms at turning traitor--what did any of them ever do for me? etc. It's interesting, because (apart from Marie Dobson) I can't remember her ever describing any of the girls at Kingscote as notably plain.
