Oh, I had never read it like that. I always thought Peter offered her food because he can't think of anything else that might help her, and then having done so realises he's hungry himself. Having gone back and looked I think the text supports either reading.
I feel quite a bit of sympathy for Ginty and her panic attacks, but I don't think Peter is particularly horrible about them; he just accepts the family knowledge (this is very Marlow) that there's nothing much to done except leave her to it.
