But the Marlows were shattered by the news themselves. I don't think Peter had meant to tell Nick, just to get her and Patrick to their respective homes to be told by their parents, but Nick is so horrified that Patrick isn't welcome at Trennels just then that she had to be told why to shut her up, I think.
