Glad it's not just me who feels this way! I don't get the impression though that Mrs M is secretly hoping that Rowan will stay home and keep her company, she's fairly plain she opposes the idea - and as to not wanting to interfere, there's a big difference between interfering in a child's love life, and interfering when they are falling on their sword.
Actually Mrs M says what she thinks, and she is absolutely right in her opinion I reckon, but where she's very wrong is thinking that this is her husband's decision to make, not hers.
Mrs M is rather infantilised by everyone, it seems to me, even by her own husband "don't worry your mother". Maybe because she was a very young bride, or because she's genuinely a bit flighty (with money, anyhow) but actually she seems to be completely right in her instincts just rubbish at asserting them.
