Have you read Dick Francis? He wrote a book a year from about 1963 throughout the 20th Century and did the same thing: set them all in the present-as-he-wrote-them. It makes a fascinating chronicle of C20 life albeit in a very particular context - but one which embraces class issues. I enjoy this aspect (as well as the stories!) But as nearly all are stand alone this does not cause the problems for him or reader that this approach over a similar number of decades but with far fewer books about the same group of children does.
