I don't think Nicola's preference for boy children needs a deep meaning. She has two brothers, the idealised big brother who she hasn't seen much for four of five years, and the best pal Peter who she gets along wioth better than just about anyone. Whereas for sisters, she has frequently-annoying Lawrie, irritating Anne, easy-to-argue-with Ginty, among others. Sisters frequently bug her, brothers don't.
Give her some annoying brothers and she would feel different.
