Perhaps she was looking for an excuse to leave Kingscote? She saw that she would inevitably be Games Captain which would have meant a tricky time with Lois, especially if she was off form. And she didn't get on with Redmond, either, (though Craven liked her) so perhaps she had just had enough of school?
