Yes, life's unfair and children have to get used to it - as I tell mine often enough. But this is such a colossal and unjustified unfairness. And from the text it's more likely that it was Chocbar thrown in. Even if they got the horses at a good price, it's still way more than the other children get. In one of the books Lawrie has been given a set of stage male-up I think, (can't remember which one.) So we are comparing the cost of a good pony - not less than £1500 in todays money, (probably more, given how special Catkin is supposed to be) with presents costing less than fifty pounds.
