Anne Heazlewood says in The Marlows and their Maker "If AF ever came unstuck it was with horses". She doesn't say that she didn't ride, just that these are some of the passages which don't hold up to detailed criticism. But she doesn't say exactly whether AF rode. We know AF was friends with rider-and-pony-writer KM Peyton and they sent each other copies of their books after publication - they admired each other's work. One wonders what Peyton would have made of passages like this, did she itch to correct them? She's alive and still writing of course (aged 89) so she could be asked!
