Actually, Nicola does mention Patrick when she says, as she's about to leave, '... Suppose Patrick'd shot himself, you just think what a huha there'd have been. ...'
So glad to find I'm not alone in finding this all a bit puzzling, especially the way they seem to blame Nicola rather than be thankful that she had averted a terrible catastrophe.
