Yes, that's roughly what I meant: he hasn't presumably much practice in speaking French, and he's shy, so he might make silly mistakes, especially around Claudie, who makes him nervous for other reasons. He might write better than he speaks, and read better than he writes. That got me through a French A-level, anyway...
