I'm conflicted myself: on the one hand I don't think it's really Nicola's responsibility to educate the Merrick Boy in basic human decency, especially from a position of disadvantage, but on the other hand, if not her, then who? His dad does his best, to be fair. (I'm unapologetically fond of Mr Merrick.)
