Anthony Burgess writes somewhere about his resentment at French obliging him to make himself into a 'temporary Frenchman'; the requirement that not only do you get the sounds right enough to be comprehensible, you have to adopt an inflection as well. I can find it in myself to sympathise with the old sod.
