Yes! That's exactly what I was thinking -- that maybe Ann and Nicola are closer than they appear in the religious sentiments department and their reactions to the Merrick "recusancy" are really mirror images of one another, in the same way that some people who feel drawn to drugs become addicts whereas others become rabid mouth-foaming anti-drug activists :)
