I went to a talk recently about Handel's favourite tenor, John Beard (1715-91), who was a boy treble at the Chapel Royal till his voice broke at the age of 18 - the audience for the talk was very surprised by how late this was, but the speaker said apparently it wasn't that uncommon for boy choristers in the Chapel Royal at that period.
