Oh, what a glorious thing to be able to do! And yes on the presence evoking the absence. I once handled the signal book from HMS Chesapeake - still with the shot sewn into its spine, but the battle had been so fast no one had had time to put it overboard to sink. The extraordinary closeness and distance I experienced holding and looking at it left me slightly dizzy.
