Yes, I can't see any better way for Mrs. Marlow to sort that one out. One of those "'But surely there must be another solution!' except there really isn't" situations.
And Nicola coped with it significantly better than most people, I think. That bit where she's on the roof with Jan is actually one of my favourites in the whole series.
