Hmmm, just looked it up - The Idiot Boy was 50 guineas, and their mother suggested they cash their Savings Certificates to buy him (referring to Peter and Lawrie).
Completely off-topic - I couldn't remember in which book they buy him, so I was just checking through The Ready-Made Family; I started reading the last bits with Nicola and Rose and got such a lump in my throat. Nicola is so brave in that.
