Given that rape within marriage was a legal impossibility until *very* recently, the three kids don't prove any social skills at all. *Addressing* Kay as Katie makes perfect sense to me - but referring to her as Katie when talking to her family doesn't - unless somewhere it's clear that she prefers the name?
