I read Nicola's going to Mass as part of her aesthetic (? I don't think aesthetic entirely covers it, but I can't think of a better word before I've had any caffeine) sensitivity more than her spiritual sensitivity - she certainly responds to tradition and beauty and mystery, so I can see why Mass would appeal to her more than C of E services.
