Second annual [livejournal.com profile] trennels ficathon?

Aug. 20th, 2007 02:38 pm
[identity profile] ankaret.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] trennels
September's coming round again, and I wondered if there was any interest in another ficathon? I've just been reading through the fics from last year and enjoying them a great deal.

We could do the same as last time, with an 'it's OK for people to write fic based on several prompts or none at all, and for several people to write to the same prompt' policy, or we could go for something more structured - I'd be inclined to go for the same as last time, as we're a fairly small community and I don't want anyone to feel pressured, but I'd love to hear everyone else's opinions.

I think it would be a good idea to follow [livejournal.com profile] gair's suggestion once again, and to ask people who write anything rated above PG (which included me last time, to my total surprise) to link to it rather than put the whole drabble in the comments of the 'post drabbles here' post. I don't want anyone to be made uncomfortable, and I'm sure our lovely mods [livejournal.com profile] thewhiteowl and [livejournal.com profile] coughingbear don't either. :)

Edited to add: here is the 'post your drabbles and links' post from last time.

Second edit: the ficathon is going ahead! Please post your prompts in comments to this post. Anything over 100 words is great, and please don't sweat it if your drabble comes out just under 100 words, either. Longer fics are also welcome. I will put up the 'comment with your fics / links to your fics here' post on Monday 3 September.

I think it's a lovely idea. I'm not sure if I am brave enough to write anything myself (though you never know, if an idea appeared that appealed!), but love to read others' work. :-)

Ooh yes. Here's a prompt for anyone who wants. How about The Cricket Term (or some part thereof) from Miss Hellier's point of view? Lots of lovely staffroom interactions, plus what on earth she made of Lower IVA's mad activities. I did once think I might write a proper story of this but I don't think that's going to happen so I'd love it if someone else did.

I'd be fascinated to read something imagined from Tim's POV, preceding Nicola's realisation that Tim is Lawrie's friend, not hers, although usually people like her the better of the two. Also because I always have difficulty imagining precisely how Lawrie and Tim are when they're alone together - I suppose it works because Tim is consciously Headmistress's Niece Agin the Establishment and Lawrie is too much of a flake to notice rules etc.

Or, given that I just saw Saint Joan and imagined the Tim Keith-produced Kingscote version throughout, a fic that slipped into the future and dealt with Lawrie being the Dauphin and Nick being Joan and Esther having stage fright over being the one-line Duchesse de Tremouille.

Yes. I miss my fic bites.
I've just had a lovely afternoon, blisfully ignoring work and radiating in last year's.

I'd like to try this! I've written fic but not Marlow fic, yet.

My prompts:

Anything featuring Meg Hopkins, Crommie or Miss Latimer

Tim and Aunt Edith 'at home'

A Christmas Ball at the Merricks'

Jan Scott talking to Rowan

A Nicola-Lawrie mistaken identity fic

Some prompts that crossed my mind...

*Ginty and the air-raid (mentioned in Traitor I think)
*Chas meets Giles for the first time (I don't think we ever see this)
*Lawrie gets a squashing - maybe at stage school?

Yes, that sounds about right. I'll be away till Thursday, so if you want to post about the deadline. Or perhaps edit this one, as everyone seems to be posting their prompts to it already.

In other words, fire away!

She's from the BBC series—I think the actor is called Harriet Walter.

Wow. If there's one prompt sure to scare me off it's 'anything set in Gondal'! I wonder if someone else will be braver than I.

Ginty's thoughts on returning to Kingscote after half-term in the term following the events of The Marlows and the Traitor

I'm blanking on her name, but how about one from that girl who was Miranda's best friend BEFORE Nicola, because she had such lovely hair ...

Or Ann matter-of-factly pointing out to a bemused Patrick that he's been chatting up BOTH her sisters andit's a bit off, and him being a bit taken aback. Or, indeed, Patrick deciding to befriend yet another Marlowe sister (Ann? Lawrie?) and everyone being completely exasperated with him.

Erm....Some Ann/Draco would be lovely

Since I am sure that Lois did not kill herself or in any other way die (as she is too fabulous a character to just die) let's have somebody try:

Nicola encounters Lois 5-10 years later. What are the circumstances? What are they both doing at this point and how do they react to one another?

You could also do Rowan encounters Lois.

Ginty in Paris

Miranda spends a holiday at Trennels

I like the Gondal bits in Peter's Room - posted a review on Amazon UK about how the characters explore different aspects of themselves through them. I only just discovered this website. Still think it is odd that Forest condemns fantasy life/ looking at different aspects of the same Character when the Marlows and Merricks basically are fantasy life/ looking at different aspects of the same Character. There is a link on the Guardian Antonia Forest Books talk section to an essay written in The Journal of Lesbian Studies (not my usual reading matter) which vaguely discusses this in relation to homosexual feeling but that I wasn't quite convinced by (but I'm not an academic and don't really understand privileging!) It is interesting that Antonia Forest's books do appear to challenge fixed catagories and received ideas while they apparently remained so important to her in her life - I guess that's just life, particularly if you were born in 1915, and that becoming a Catholic could seem like a kind of rebellion. Actually, I'm just glad the article didn't out Giles as gay as it could have shaken up my whole adolescent world view.
