You can read this interesting article by Emma Darwin on http://vulpeslibris.wordpress.com/  - one of the most thoughtful pieces on Forest I have read.  And there is a gloves-off fight in the commentary!  You can amuse yourself trying to identify which comments are by me (probably not difficult).

Do back me up everyone.  She has the nerve to compare AF to Enid Blyton!

Well, I don't think she does compare Antonia Forest to Enid Blyton: she states that while both of them are in the same genre one can't imagine EB writing the near-suicide scene in Peter's Room. Seems like fair comment to me - rather like acknowledging that Shakespeare and Feydeau were both playwrights, but you can't imagine Shakespeare doing as much with four doors, one window, five characters and a double bed.

That's an excellent article. Thank you for the link.

Nicola's preference for boys in general and her brothers in particular is probably due to all the books and films in which boys have all the fun (for this very reason, I dressed as a boy on holiday and called myself Stephen). And in the case of her brothers, it's probably due to not knowing them very well because she hardly sees them, so she projects better qualities onto them. I didn't like Giles from the start though. We only hear indirectly, but he was horrible to Nicola when she ran away in Autumn Term.

I should say
