There is an awful lot of character-building decision-making going on and I love the way we get to see some of it happening, as well as Rowan's explanation later in the book along the lines of "runs away at the sight of a ball? Stick her in the first eleven" (not got book to hand). It's aimed at encouraging the underdog and squashing any signs of getting above yourself (which plays in Third Remove's favour in the Kitchen and Jumble decsion). It can't be leaders they're aiming to turn out. Is it humilty and virtue and community spirit? Detached cynics who refuse to play and remain aloof like Jan Scott can't be the aim either.
