Yes, I think I rather agree. This is one reason why I'm avid to find out if Forest ever read Mary Renault's contemporary-set novels: Lawrie shares a lot of characteristics with the male lead of Return to Night, Julian--and Renault's novel was published in 1947, probably a bit too late to be a significant influence on Autumn Term, but certainly in time for the rest.
