For those who like to contemplate Mrs Marlow's fecundity: The record for the two closest separate births.

rose_and_lizard has written a crossover fic (various Josephine Tey novels) featuring Lois, and is in the process of another (Chalet School). Go and read, it's excellent.

It struck me in the middle of the night (things quite often do, it's like Lawrie in the bath) that Antonia Forest's real name was Patricia. The Merricks are called Anthony and Patrick. Weird piece of trivia of the week.

Two closest separate births not involving superfoetation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superfetation)*, presumably? (I am not, however, sure why spelling foetus in the British way is considered 'false etymology'.)

*I have an idea that this featured in Dunnett's Niccolo series, but it's far too long since I read it.

It's because the Latin root (fetus, fruit/offspring) is spelt without the 'o', which presumably crept in in English on the model of words whose Latin/Greek roots did have the diphthong. There's a small voice at the back of my head saying foetus isn't unattested in Latin, but without my dictionary to check I could be making that up. 'Fetus' still looks wrong to me, though.
