I can't decide whether to:
a) try to answer the Antonia Forest questions real time as if I was the contestant to see how I would do
or
b) try to speed type the questions into LJ so I have them for the record...

If several of us try both at once, we might get all the questions! I also plan to tape it, so shouldn't be hard to go back and transcribe the questions afterwards. I can speed type quite well whilst someone is talking - plus just writing the answer helps as it's relatively easy to recreate the question from that.

I see that the competitor is called Gillian Ledwick.

What is Nicola Marlow's parting present from her parents which falls out of the train window on the way to school in Autumn Term?

When Nicola and Lawrie join Kingscote school they assume that they will be in 3A; which form are they actually put into?

Which book does Miss Kempe recommend that Lawrie should read in order to understand how to play the part of Ariel in The Tempest?

In the Players and the Rebel, which play do J (not sure of name as I've not read the book) Merrick and his companions persuade the manager of The Globe to put on on the eve of the rebellion?

Which poet friend of Sir Walter Raleigh comes to dinner at the Marlows' house in the historical novel The Player's Boy?

In the Ready Made Family which book by Jane Austen is Nicola reading because she heard Karen say that practically every male character was in the navy?

What word, used by Lawrie in The Thuggery Affair, is described as the Lower IVs word of the month for all disasters from leaking ballpoints to expulsion?

Which poem by Robert Louis Stevenson is Lawrie's set test piece in the elocution competition of the Colebridge and District summer festival?

What is the first line of the song from which Nicola gets the idea of putting sugar in petrol tank of Foley's boat?

What is the school nickname for Lower IVAs form mistress, Miss Cromwell, who everyone agrees is horribly sarastic and has favourites?

In which pantomime do Chas and Fob Dodd take part as a squirrel and beetle, respectively?

In the Gondal story in Peter's Room, which character turns traitor under threat of torture and agrees to kill Jason the king?

As well as the car registration number PBM 533, what are the other three words that Patrick writes on the dusty window pane at the petrol station?

What is the name of scholarship formerly held by Kay Marlow which is awarded to her younger sister Lawrie in The Cricket Term?

What is the name of final dive with which Peter beats Patrick by one point in the competition at the summer festival in Falconer's Lure?

She got all but one right, no passes, 14 points. She missed (slightly) the name of the song.

(sorry I'm not really anonymous, I do have a sign-in name of LJ, but I don't normally remember the password or how to do it, and I'm not on my own computer! So I'm afraid I keep posting these anon comments...)

I'd have gotten the song, but there are 4-5 others that I wouldn't have gotten. On the other hand, I haven't even read the Players books for about 15 years, and it's probably been a decade since I've read the Thuggery Affair either. [Thinks: maybe it's time to revisit the Thuggery Affair. Thinks: and I just ordered *The Marlows and the Traitor* in German!]

Oooh, I've just received my copy of Marlows and the Traitor in German! I haven't read it properly, just skimmed through to see what they'd changed and found they've missed out massive chunks. I have to say that on a first glimpse through I'm not happy with it at all ... makes me realise how much of the magic of AF's books depends on her use of langauge and all the small, seemingly insignificant details.....

Well I'd probably not have got the historical ones, having never read those, although I had some idea just from reading the summaries online. But then I probably wouldn't have entered a competition without having read them first!

If I'd re-read the others recently, I might have got the rest, but I couldn't, off the top of my head, remember the song fast enough, or Miss Cromwell's nickname, or Patrick's words in the dust, or the book Lawrie had to read to help with the Tempest, or even the name of her set-piece at the festival, although I'd have remembered with time. I don't know if I'd ever have got the Gondal one, because I tend to skip through those bits pretty quickly when I'm reading that one - the names are all familiar, but I don't really follow the Gondal plot all that well, so who betryed whom would be a bit beyond me! Again though I suppose I'd have mugged up on it a bit if I'd been entering a competition, so I guess I'd have read it more thoroughly.

So she's into the second round - shame they can't have the Marlow books again then, but with harder questions!

Miss Cromwell was known by two nicknames, as I remember. One only appears in Autumn Term.

The one that was considered correct was "Ironsides". (Of course, that doesn't mean the other wouldn't have been considered correct as well, had she given it!). I might have thought of "Crommie", but that's not so much a nickname as a diminutive, I suppose. Im pretty sure they didn't specify in the question which book it was from
