Will anyone else be watching Carols From King's on Christmas Eve? The Processional carol is "Once in Royal David's City", so I think I'll read the Christmas bit from End of Term just before.
I expect I will be. The processional nearly always is Royal David, it's traditional!
I always thought of that bit in End of Term when attending <;j user=thyme_slimy>'s carol service when she was at school, as they always had a soloist do the first verse.
I don't think Herrick wants the emphasis on 'Once' - he's merely stressing the word himself to point out to Nicola that she should sing "with regret". You couldn't put too much stress on it without it sounding stupid because it's an anacrusis.
I've always thought that it's expecting a lot of a thirteen-year-old, even Nicola, to sing six verses unaccompanied without going flat. The boys at King's rarely manage even one...
I don't really know where else to put this but I've had a crack at the start of a grown-up Marlows story. Nicola is in the Navy (natch) and everything's a bit wrong for most of them...

hope it whiles away a few minutes for somebody! I will try to post/write some more over Christmas.
I love End of Term. Reading it is part of the run-up to Christmas for me.
