comic bits

I was reading through people's earlier posts about favourite books and favourite bits of books.  One of my favourite scenes is in Cricket Term where Nicola goes AWOL on the roof, and Lower IVA pretend to go looking for her and run amok in the school grounds.  Miss Cromwell appears like an avenging angel...Lower IVA come running like filings to a magnet...there is terrible trouble and in the middle of it all, Nicola walks in, completely unaware of what is going on.  Deliciously funny.  Does anyone else have favourite comic moments?

I love the conversation about hubris in Cricket Term: 'What is it that clobbers you in Greek? Hubris?' 'No, I think it's Nemesis does the clobbering when it's hubris you've got.' (Probably not verbatim; I don't have the book handy.)

I like that bit too. I had a vague idea once of writing a story about the events of The Cricket Term from Miss Helier's perspective. I imagine there would be some interesting conversations in the staffroom that she was party to, without quite understanding. And she's obviously terrified of Crommie almost as much as Lawrie is!

I do hope you decide to write that, I would love to read it! :-)

That is one of my favourite bits too. And maybe slightly macabrely (if that is a word) I love the way the whole 'death of Marie' is handled and written about by Forest - the way people react so completely in character, and the writing of the form letter... it is all so very real, and even as a child I used to pick Cricket Term up just to reread that section on its own!

And I meant to say... I do find it comical too - which is why I think I am perhaps a little macabre!

I'd like to read Miss Hellier's term too...I think Lawrie's version would be funny as well, probably utterly oblivious to almost anything going on that isn't the School Play. (Marie's death or Nick's cut hand getting barely a mention.) Although all the rants about how unfair she isn't Caliban might get wearing....

Actually, I guess Lawrie is the source of some of the best comic moments.

oh, the hellibonk is one of my favourite funny bits too! it's soooo vividly imaginable (ooh, good word making-up there) and crommie taking the class to bits afterwards always makes me cower, never mind the class!

i also loved the bits in 'cricket term' when tim and nicola suddenly seem to hit it off again and end up giggling insanely at val being carried off by demons and...oh, there was another similar occasion too, where they have one of those conversations that start quite normally and end up on some wild tangent with hilarious consequences.

i also loved rowan's phrase about miss keith not putting up with members of lower four running around saying it wished it violated miranda's honour - the marlow family generally have a beautifully waspish turn of phrase when the mood strikes.

My favourite bit in Cricket Term is the bit where Tim and Nicola are chatting and get serious giggles when Tim says, of her design for Ariel, or was it Caliban: "Me auntie wouldn't wear it" and they both get a vision of her doing so.... I, too, got serious giggles the first time I read it, and it still makes me smile.

I love the two bits in End Of Term where Miss Cromwell gets stuck into Lawrie - on the first day of term; and then later about the Christians and the Jews.

And also, in The Cricket Term, the scene where Nicola balances Lawrie's owl on her head.

Funny that Miss Cromwell seems to be providing most of the comic relief!

Also "Peter buttons... Binks only unbuttons" in Run Away Home.

My favourite bit is in End of Term, when "the door opened importantly" and Val Longstreet walks in to say to Nicola, "would you come to the telephone in Miss Carter's office. Your Member of Parliament wants to speak to you." (apologies if I misquote)

I just loved the fact that Mr Merrick would say that, rather than that he was a family friend doing a favour for Nicola.
