Inquiring minds want to know. I was rereading Run Away Home, and I have a few religious-related questions. I'm an atheist, albeit with a vaguely Protestant background, and I don't understand some of the terms. Rowan says that when Ramsay does his duty by the ASB, Mrs Marlow goes to Evensong instead of Matins. So:

1) What's the ASB?
2) What's Evensong? Given the context, is it a Catholic service?
3) Why does Mrs Marlow cut Matins when it's the ASB?
4) Why does this upset Ann?

Oh, it was just...grim. It was about two years ago, for the christening of a friend's child, and I was so tempted to say, "look, I'm an unbeliever here for the post-service piss-up, not the mid-service agapemone".

Eep. I don't think I've ever been gladder that my lot seem mostly to go in for nondenominational naming ceremonies, even if it does involve rather too much reading from Khalil Gibran.

One presumes this is some kind of 'Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss' New Testament thing?

Yes. It used to be restricted to the Cayholic and Anglican clergy - hands on shoulders, each cheelk to each cheek without actually touching - but in the 1960s it was decided in both Churches that it should be shared with the congregation as a handshake.
