I have found various things in the school archives. Research was somewhat impeded by a myopic receptionist and a detour into the school Matriculation records. However, I have unearthed a couple of things.
Antonia Forest's school career, Sports:
-1927, Pat Rubenstein (AF's name before she changed it) recorded in the Lower Fourth. She is in Miss Shovelier's form. Miss Shovelier is a teacher who is still around approximately twenty years later. She is a pianist. PR is in New Zealand House.
-1928, Pat Rubinstein gained a Colour for Netball, and represented the school in the Junior Netball Team
-1929, Senior Colour for Netball. It appears she was no longer on the School Netball team, which is odd.
-1931, PR now on the Senior Netball team, the House Netball team, the House Cricket team, the House drill team, the House singing group, and played for the first Netball team twice that term (as opposed to the second Senior team). She has a Colour for singing.
-1932, gets School certificate. An 'HF Rubenstein' is recorded as having written a play called 'Insomnia'. Since no other Rubensteins are recorded in the Sixth Form, this is something of a mystery. I must re-check. She is now a Senior Netball Sub-Captain.
-1933, PR is recorded as having played Goal Shooter, still in the second Senior team. (Which is commended because 'they gave such good practice to the first'(!) ) She is now a House secratary, is on the school Cricket team and is also on the general house committee, in addition to being on the House teams for drill and singing. Exactly what each of these duties involves I endeavoured to find out, however the only information was in a formidbly large file entitled something along the lines of 'School Rules 1900-40'.
If anyone would like the exact transcripts of the (not-very-informative) games summaries for each year, feel free to ask.
School Plays: Whilst the magazine for 1927 had a cast list for its play, the rest of years are not so helpful. There are several mentions of the 'School Certificate forms' putting on a play, which leads me to believe that AF was probably in one of the following plays, at least.
'The Winds'
This is a play about Geography (!). The solution to this play rests on the line 'A line of longitute is an imaninary line running North to South and cutting the equator'. The person who wrote the review notes that '[she] hopes that the standard of Geography in the School is not corrupted'.
'Marco Millions'
Exactly what this play is about, I couldn't exactly ascertain. It inclued a character called Kublai Khan, which was played 'very well' by a girl called Ruby Travall (not sure on the spelling there...can't read own handwriting). The reviews of plays of this period of the School's history tend rather towards to the critical side rather than the complimentary; the reviewer notes that 'the rest of the parts were played with varying ability' and that the thought of seeing SHHS perform does not fill him with delight (to paraphrase 'a bunch of nervous schoolgirls with stage fright re-enacting the great plays of this century'). The play was 'well dressed' and had 'excellent lighting'. The reviewer also noted that 'all players could be heard'(!).
Possible plays:
'Pilgrim's Progress'
An 'amusing 'play about the progress of a girl through the school 'from the third form to Matriculation'. A large section of this play is available for transcription, should anyone so desire. The play has a memorable line about much repeated excuses for missing text books.
'Unnamed'
This is a play performed by New Zealand House in a Dramatics competition. The lead (not AF, don't remember the name tho') is commended very highly, the rest of the cast are told they should inject more liveliness into the play.
I would like to thank slemslempike for advising me on which parts to include in this post (all of them!). Thanks!
ETA: is anyone interested in the marks AF got in her School certificate? I saw them when I was checking for extra information on her.
ETA2: I see much talk of a Lois. If anyone is interested, there was a Lois, the captain of the first senior Netball team at the same time as AF. This could be purely coincidental, however.
