owl: Nicola Marlow (nicola)
[personal profile] owl posting in [community profile] trennels
I was reading Thuggery Affair for the third time this week (and managed to put a giant crease in the cover when I was carrying it in my bag, boo). Anyway, the thing is, when Lawrie and the boys are walking home after the canoe sinks, it says that the Thuggery don't often cross the river, so they aren't seen in Westbridge much. But Patrick can go from his house to Monk's Culvery under cover; so does the Tunnel of the Moated Pile go under the river then? It seems a little ambitious.

ETA: What about the rest of you? What way do you imagine Westbridge and its surroundings—do you have a mental map like [livejournal.com profile] ankaret and I do, or do you never think about it?
And is it possible to draw a map, or are there too many contradictions?

Now I'm wondering whether my mental map of Colebridge and its environs is entirely squint (which it very likely is).

Hmm, am rubbish at jography, will have to think about where I believe everything is - I have very vivid images of Trennels and everywhere else, but not sure how it fits together.

Can't tell my east from my west but I was always intrigued by the bit at the beginning of Attic Term when Nicola gets a lift home from Mr Merrick as Ma wants her home smartish. The 'long straight road' (may have misquoted but I'm sure about the long) was swallowed up by the land rover in 10 minutes. 10 minutes!!! You can travel miles in that time. So however long would it take to walk from the Merrick's to Trennels? And if it's quicker to ride across fields why didn't Nicola do that? Although I suppose she'd have to tack up and unsaddle t'other end.

Ann Heazelwood wrote an e-book called "Marlowmaker" about Antonia Forest and the Marlows; I think Girls Gone By are publishing it on paper next year, aren't they? That had a map of Dorset, with both real and fictional places marked; also maps of Kingscote and Trennels.

Sorry, didn't mean to be anonymous. I once tried to set up a user name but got lost, and couldn't be bothered trying again. I thought I could always sign at the bottom - well, I can, when I remember. Sorry!
