It looks as if Girls Gone By are publishing an Antonia Forest continuation novel, Spring Term by Sally Hayward.

I'm not affiliated with GGBP and don't know any more about it than what I read on the webpage, but it seemed like interesting news. Congratulations to Sally Hayward, and I'm sure lots of people will be eagerly awaiting a chance to read the book. :)

Hmm. My knee-jerk reaction is to say "DO NOT WANT" (and I wish they'd put a bit more effort into trying to get the rights for the actual AF school books, rather than publishing follow-ons...) but if it's approved by Sue and edited by Tig, it must be pretty decent.

(One feels moved to wish that they had asked Tig to edit the GGBP webpage while they were at it....surely she must be somewhat underwhelmed to find herself referred to as the grammatically inexplicable "Tig Thomas, not only a professional editor, but for whom Antonia Forest is a major favourite.")

The thing is, the great unmapped future after Run Away Home is so precious -- it gives fans infinite space in which to play with possible futures, and if this version forecloses any of the possibilities (or crushes my long-cherished ideas about what should and shouldn't happen next) I will be sad.

I was thinking about this earlier, and your last paragraph is chiming with me. Fanfic online, or in zines, is acknowledged as part of the infinite space, while the official publication in a book form still feels like "more", and shutting down rather than contributing.

Did you end up ordering a copy, Vilakins? Beth in Bulls has an email group. She orders from GGBP and then posts the books out. Many of the group are Chalet School fans as well, and they have regular meet-ups. (I'm not a Chalet fan and live too far away for the meetings anyway.)

I've got a Keyboard WiFi (not 3G) one. However, I went to the USA in August and so ordered one off amazon and had it sent to friends over there so it was a bit cheaper. Also, the dollar was really good when I ordered it. I think it ended uping costing about $145 NZ.

The reason I didn't get the 3G was that I knew I'd just download books at home before I went anywhere, so wouldn't really need the 3G capability.

It's brilliant, though. I'm only on my 3rd time charging the battery since I got it at the beginning of August. You use less battery if you have the WiFi turned off when you aren't downloading something.

I've put heaps of fanfic on there as well, saving them to pdf files.

Thanks for the info! Downloading fanfic is definitely something I plan to do. AO3 offers easy downloads in four formats: MOBI, EPUB, PDF, and HTML. :-)

I'd be happy with one of the current models but I suspect Greg is holding out for the Fire Tablet though I don't think colour is necessary. I see the batteries can last for a couple of months. I've been wanting a reader for ages.

Sally originally posted this story in the Middles' Common Room about two years ago. A few of us suggested she should try to get it published. I thought it was brilliant. I know it's been edited and therefore isn't exactly the same as the MCR version, but I'd definitely recommend it to AF fans.

I'm doubtful about this, however brilliant the story, for all of the above reasons. I've always disliked the idea of continuation type novels, (especially when they try to do it to Jane Austen) That said, there are so many loose ends left hanging at the end of RAH, the need for an official 'what happened next' is quite strong.
I also wonder about school novels set during spring term. There's a reason the others are all autumn or summer terms, because that's when everything happens at school.
No doubt, however, I'll end up buying it, if only so I can join in the inevitable discussions about it on here!

But isn't spring term when they have exams and end-of-school-year prize giving etc? That's what ours are like, but of course they're also end of calendar year. Then in autumn we return to school in a new form (once), year (now). Is it quite different in the northern hemisphere? I'm curious about how it would work if the long summer holidays fall in the middle of the school year.

In many ways my boarding school was very like Kingscote, but this might be a major difference and I've never actually worked it out.

In Britain, the school year runs from September till July. It's a three-term year - autumn term is September-December, spring term January-April (finishing for the Easter holidays), summer term April/May - July. Roughly, anyway! The long school summer holidays are between July and September.

That's what I thought about the school year. but I was thrown off by the names. I thought spring term would be the third and last one, just before the summer holidays, but instead it's what I'd think of as the winter term. OK, I see the point now of not much happening in it. In fact it's surprising how much happened in the Kingscote autumn term!

We used to have three terms like that (but in different months) but now it's four. I'm always having to google if I want to know if it's school holidays. :-P

Hallo, thanks to Lizarfau for directing me here! I totally agree that everyone has their own ideas about What Happens Next. The last thing I want is to offend anyone, so please please don't read Spring Term if it will spoil things for you! However if you do choose to read it be assured that Tig Thomas has kept me on the straight and narrow, and has allowed absolutely nothing un-Forest-like.
